I’m trying to put together a Creative Writing class in town and I thought I should put something on my blog about it (as I’ve been directing people to my website). The notice below pretty much covers it, but to assemble some links for easy access:
two essays I’ve written (sort of) about Vietnam: HERE and HERE
a couple of my published stories: HERE and HERE
As I say, I’m willing to do pretty much whatever students want, and can teach non-weird, non-super-literary stuff too. Come on, it’ll be fun!
Creative Writing Class in HCMC
Do you write short stories? Essays? Poetry? Interested in improving your craft and maybe publishing your work? I would like to help.
I am a published author with a Master of the Fine Arts degree from the University of Alabama – a top Creative Writing program in the United States. I have published short stories, essays and journalism in numerous publications, including a few essays about my time in Vietnam. I have also taught Introduction to Creative Writing, Prose Writing, and Literature classes at the University level.
Depending on my how many people are interested I am willing to craft a class to the participants. I would lean towards a class with the initial period being devoted to the discussion of a contemporary or classic published work followed by a “workshop,” discussing the participants’ work for the week, but am open to other approaches that focus more on the mechanics of craft (point of view, setting, etc). I would also provide an individual critique and would be happy to talk about venues for possible publication. I think meeting at a central coffeeshop would work.
In the US, such a class would run several hundred dollars, but I think in Vietnam, a hundred dollars for 4-5 classes with a one-on-one critique at the end seems about right. Please check out my website for my bio and publishing credits along with links to my work. Thanks and I hope to hear from you!
